Lunching with Heather Duffy-Stone's Main Character!

Posted by jennifer_brown on March 10, 2009 at 12:00 AM

We're back on our lunch tour today, as part of my "Lunching with the Leads" blog tour. Today I'm lunching with the main character of Heather Duffy-Stone's YA novel, THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO TELL YOU.

About the Book:

The stories people tell are always about the things we left behind, and about the things we wish we could do again. The real story isn't about what you know; it's about what you wish you knew then. When my brother and my best friend fell in love—that was the end of everything I knew.

Fraternal twins Nadio and Noelle share a close connection—and as Noelle's best friend since they were five, Keeley Shipley fit perfectly into their world. But everything changes after Keeley spends the summer before junior year at Oxford. When Keeley returns, Nadio falls in love with her. Noelle, ripped apart by resentment, sees her as an ungrateful rich girl. But Keeley has a painful story that she can't tell yet. As Nadio and Keeley hide their romance, Noelle dives into something of her own—a destructive affair with an older boy.

Beautifully presented by dual narrators in a haunting stream of memories, this is the deeply moving story of how secrets can consume a friendship—and how love can heal it.

Wow, I can't wait to dig in to this book! I hear food is BIG in THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO TELL YOU. So... let's lunch!

Where are we eating?

We're eating at this little restaurant in upstate New York... its small town with a big town chef, a little too fancy for its surroundings and see that boy there behind the line? The one with a tattoo on his hand and kind of messy hair... he's why you're here.

That boy over there? Well, I'm intrigued...

What's on the menu?

Risotto cakes with lobster cream sauce.

Holy risotto, that does sound like the handiwork of a big time chef! Well, I must say it sounds delish! I hear you're inviting someone to join us. Who is it?

That boy behind the line, she know he's working, but when he gets a break he might bring out a special appetizer or come sit down and maybe just maybe he'll rest his hand on your shoulder for a second. If you're lucky...

Lucky, huh? Well, I'm already feeling lucky just eating here. So while I'm waiting for him to come over, let's chat. What do you want to talk about?

The tattoos. Because she can tell you the story of each of them.

Ooh, I can't wait to hear all about them. But just to make sure I don't embarrass myself, what is the one subject your MC hopes I don't bring up?

Let's just not talk about that boy, how she knows him and what they are to each other.

Okay. Mum's the word, I promise. Instead, I'll just ask... how's your main character handling all this limelight she's been getting since the March 1st release of THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO TELL YOU?

It makes her nervous. She pulls her hood up over her head and puts sunglasses on and blushes, still secretly relishing it all a little bit.

Boy, I'd love to hear more, but lunch hour's over already. We have time for a quick dessert. Tell me, how does your main character eat a Reeses?

Teeny bites at a time. Edge, middle, edge.

Me too! Well, good luck to your character, Heather, and good luck to you. I know your book will be a great success!
